Betrayed by Achilles

I’m so mad I could spit. About six weeks ago I did something to my right Achilles tendon. I can’t flex my foot without pain. Flexing one’s foot is fairly important when one is trying to go uphill. Going uphill is something one tends to do in the Himalaya.

My GP, who checked my foot two days ago, said these things take many months to heal and that trekking is going to be a problem.

Today Anna & I hiked up Marin Avenue, and I did fine when I turned out my foot in a duck walk and stepped up slightly sideways.

Cheryl and I just got off a Skype video conversation (she looking lovely, dramatic and unusually floral). She thinks I’m in better shape than I think I am—enough so I can safely cool it for a week on exercise and see if things improve.

My online research suggests that this condition is a byproduct of age combined with overexertion. How humiliating.

  1. I bow down before my wonderful GP. He’s e-mailed me to say he thinks I can go to Nepal if I use ample anti-inflammatories and ice, exercise carefully and don’t walk up hills in the meantime. It may well be painful during the trek, but as long as I’m not going to tear anything I think I can handle it.

  2. just listening to BBC. missed the beginning but orangutans and such don’t have achilles tendons. so cheer up. without one you might be a chimp.
