Take a Deep Breath

The woman I’m staying with is alternately warm and crusty. Rather like a pie, come to think of it. Speaking of which, she is an extraordinary cook. I’ve had an array of sopas and empanadas and all kinds of other -as foods whose names I don’t remember. She makes a killer horchata, too.

Esta tarde I went with Magdalena to school which is far from here and just a few blocks from downtown. I decided to be brave and tried to find my way around for a while. I really need a map. I found a store for Eleni.

And I succeeded in getting to La Plaza de la Constitución and to the giant reloj, and then turned and ran like a frightened rat to the safety of the ABC Escuela de Inglés.

  1. You need to go to Los Posos, not Guanajuato. Los Posos is about two or three hours east of Guanajuato and an extraordinary sight and site. Guanajauto is OK but not great. Los Posos is definitely very strange and memorable. Plan on two days there. You will not be disappointed. Henri Jame’s, a bastard son of English royalty, created this magnificent and enormous instant ruin in the Mexican jungle with proceeds from the sale of his surrealist art collection. It is a magnificent thing to contemplate. The town is very small and wonderful and you may be able to stay at his home, which is now a hotel. (Jame’s first name may not be Henri, but whatever). But, you must must must experience this place if you can.

  2. Bul: I just looked the place up. It’s actually closer to where I’m living than to where I’m going tomorrow. I watched the video. Have you been to the place? I’ll put it on my to-do list in hopes I can get there in my remaining time. xo G

  3. Even if it is cold and lonesome, I think Pachuca has a certain prettiness to it. My poor ole frightened rat of a mother.

I wasn’t going to comment, but then I had to, because that rhyme Oscar showed you – I *know* it! I learned it in middle school Spanish! We did it as a little song, which I will sing for you sometime.

  4. The only thing I can think of to say is that-despite being required to use a workbook and the possibility of lacking in teaching credits (and despite uncertainty, period)-maybe this means that you won’t have to teach BRITISH English? Maybe?
On another note, we inherited a new dog (we really truly weren’t meaning to, nor were we looking, but you know…): he’s a Dachsund Chihuahua cross who is far too needy-even for me-and who has HUGE testicles. Right now he’s riding in a tiny army-issue satchel at Jason’s hip as he cleans house, and we’ve named him “Onion”.
I think he just peed, though, in the bag.
I’ll send you pictures soon, and not (just) of the balls, I promise.
So you have that to look forward to.
Thank you for the pic of my store, BTW. One would expect it to sell something more compelling than kids’ clothes, though.
I love you and I wish I were there and I love you some more.
    Be a good girl.

  5. So, I decided to see if you had anymore “updates” on your website. How ridiculous is all this. I was telling Logan today during lunch that I wish we could have all stayed here Oaxaca, rounded up our own students for 6 weeks, borrowed Enrique’s space in the evening/afternoon, and donated the money to the school. How much would that have rocked? Sigh. In another lifetime, I suppose. Enjoy your travels. I can guarantee that your Spanish will improve by necessity. Mine certainly did this weekend when I went out and about on my own. See you soon. K
