Dispatch #1

Thanks to Jill, who took a billion hours trying to figure out how to get this blog visible again. She tried to explain the problem to me. “See here, where it says ‘login:invalid php rn17 38y.’ As you can tell, that’s gonna throw an error in the context of send#??–>! 73ork>> //br!@#.”

Not much to tell, actually. I’ve spent most of my time in the hotel, trying to get ready for the start of classes. Had my first classroom day mapped out, but it seems they want to do something different, so I don’t know how to prepare for what’s next.

The one day I did venture forth, I found navigation difficult, with the usual skeins of auto and motorcycle traffic obeying rules that only they understood, and the hail of business propositions pounding in from all sides.

My first day here, there was a glorious thunderstorm. I watched it from my hotel room overlooking the Saigon River.

I find it annoying how fickle my Web browser is when I travel. It detects I’m in a new place and assumes I speak the local language fluently. That wasn’t as bad when I was in Mexico, but come on, man. I want the results of my Google search in English.

In a little while I have to pack up all my stuff from this hotel and move to another, about 8 blocks away. It’s too hard to walk here, so I’ll take a cab. I wish I wasn’t moving around so much. After five days at this place I want to go to the Mekong Delta. When I get back I’m staying at a much cheaper hotel that my colleagues found for me.
