Day 59: Conservation

Another drizzly, grey day with a totally blank calendar.

Every morning I play a dozen or so games of Solitaire on my iPad. My average time to win a round is about two-plus minutes. But check this out. On Deal #538807, I was under a minute, and only 29 seconds slower than the computer’s score.

I’m encouraged by the coronavirus numbers in Alameda County where I live. We’ve been doing something right. With a population of over 1.5 million, there have been only 2,178 documented cases as of today, only 67 of which are in Berkeley and far fewer in little Albany. I suppose one has to double (or more) those numbers for an accurate count, but still.

Things I do differently now, to conserve resources:

  • Count my TP squares
  • Make my coffee weaker (yuck)
  • Use shorter strings of dental floss
  • Subdivide pieces of Kleenex into quarters
  • Ration my potato chips

This newly viral photograph by journalist Lionel Top reportedly shows a school in Tourcoing, France on the day it reopened in the wake of the virus.

Top said the children didn’t seem to mind being confined to separate squares and were laughing and playing, but that adults who see the picture are bothered by it. It is sobering to wonder what the future will look like for kids.

Here are parts three and four of Molly’s jigsaw game. She carefully curates the puzzle pieces, selecting each batch for maximum mystery. I do believe my guess of Edward Gorey is looking spot-on, and now we have more cats, but we don’t know yet who’s sitting in that chair.

I told Eleni that I don’t have much to look forward to, so she texted me a list, excerpted here, of things that await me:

  • Bubbly and junk food
  • Sunday Allison-Girl Zooming
  • Searching for a dog to adopt (not even adopting one, just looking, and thinking)
  • Someday smelling that newborn’s head
  • Granny-calls
  • The rare occasions when Ember deigns to talk to you via video chat
  • Bloggy comments
  • More snacks and bubbly

But what I am really anticipating in the shorter term is seeing Eleni & Co. again in person, and my next Ember-visit. Am I deluded to hope for sometime in June? Her household has been as exceptionally cautious as mine these last almost-two months. As we will continue to be until we feel safe again, whenever that will be.

  1. Look at that glorious Solitaire score!

Rationing potato chips?! What terrible depths one has reached.

It’s fun to see the puzzle take shape! I did pick out each batch of pieces very carefully.

  2. I can’t even make out what you see, in the pieces you’ve assembled.thus far?? Cats??

Add to Eleni’s list your carnation-monitoring.

Why ration your dental floss?? A shortage would be welcome — but I don’t foresee it.

Do you also play good old deal-out-the=cards Canfield? I play many games / day.
