Day 27: A Failed Experiment

After my morning phone check-in with Ma, I walked to the farmers market during their senior hour at 9:00, donning my new mask and some nitrile gloves as I approached. It wasn’t too crowded, and safety measures were in place: not allowing customers to touch the products, and of course the six-foot distancing rule. Everyone there—vendors and shoppers alike—were masked or bandanna’d, except for one man. I found all kinds of goodies. That’s fresh rye bread in the upper-right; you could pound nails with it. Believe it or not, this is sixty dollars’ worth of stuff.

Isolation Activity Update: I’ve run into a snag with my toilet paper experiment (in which I compare how long a roll of Charmin Mega lasts versus a roll of Kirkland, using three squares at a time for each brand). But here’s the problem: all squares are not equal. Kirkland is much thinner, requiring more per use, and skewing the results of my scientific study.

Three Squares of Charmin (top) and of Kirkland (bottom)

This drawing needs some kind of title or caption. I can’t think of anything. She looks like she’s about to burst into song: Perhaps Some Enchanted Evening.

Last night on the phone with Anna I was recalling a story about my father and his moment of fame. It came in 1989 when he and his friend Peachie were extras on an episode of TV’s Unsolved Mysteries, shot on location in Hana, Hawaii. Dad was a big ham, and when any kind of audio or video recording device was in the vicinity, he just couldn’t help himself. On the day of the show’s taping, he and Peachie were ostensibly archeologists on a forensic dig, pawing through a mound of rocks that marked a makeshift grave. As cameras rolled, he picked up a bone and held it aloft, declaring, “Why, look: a BONE!” Cut! Probably not what an archeologist would say on finding exactly what he knew would be there. And certainly not what an extra with a non-speaking part should do. In the end, Dad (mostly his hands) got almost nine seconds of airtime. Go to 41:50. He’s the one in the brown plaid shirt. I’m quite excited I was able to unearth this video.

Finally, here’s Molly messing around on our Zoom chat this afternoon:
