Last night I took my medicine, brushed my teeth and tucked into bed, trying without success to get comfortable. I felt something rigid cutting into my face as I snuggled into the pillow. After several seconds I realized that, lying there in the dark, I was still wearing my glasses. And that reminded me of Mrs. Esdale. She was a middle-aged English woman who did light housekeeping for Grannie in the 1960s. She fascinated me because of her accent and because she always said everything twice. Yes, everything twice. When she died, my mother went to the funeral. Let me tell you about Ma: she is very proper and knows everything about etiquette, and she certainly understands correct behavior at such a sombre event. But when she saw Mrs. Esdale in the casket, with glasses on, Ma struggled to suppress an urge to laugh. Corrective lenses are of little use if you’re in the dark, or dead.
Even after about week, random John Prine lyrics and musical phrases are still running through my head. I can’t believe he’s gone, and in such an awful way.

Hi, Molly. I don’t know my fave Prine songs because there are so many. “That’s the Way That the World Goes ‘Round” is an excellent anthem. And of course “Paradise.” I really don’t know where to begin. I wish I could stop the Prine earworms now, though.
